Brian Balmer, Ph.D., is interested in protected species biology, population structure, and management.

Brian began his career with terrestrial mammals, studying black bears in southwestern Virginia, before turning his focus to the marine field. He has spent 18+ years designing and implementing field and laboratory studies to further our understanding of marine mammals, and to determine population-level impacts associated with anthropogenic stressors. Brian has extensive experience using photographic-identification, health assessments, remote sampling, and telemetry to provide a comprehensive outlook of marine mammal populations and the threats to which these species continue to be exposed.
